Shoprite Checkers Women of the Year Awards — Bespoke Packaging Design

Developed in collaboration with Nataniël for the Shoprite Checkers Women of the Year Awards, this project explored the intersection of luxury packaging, paper sculpture, and event design.

Created for every guest attending the event, the packaging formed part of a larger visual narrative celebrating achievement, growth, and excellence. The challenge was to design an object that would feel intimate at an individual scale while contributing to the collective visual impact of the event environment.

A tree motif was developed as the central design element, symbolizing growth, achievement, and lasting impact. Rather than applying the imagery as decoration, the tree was engineered directly into the structure of the packaging, emerging from the surface of the lid.

Material restraint formed an important part of the design strategy. White paper provided a refined architectural foundation, allowing light, reflection, and detail to become the primary visual elements. The tree element created a three-dimensional form. The exposed cut lines were lined with reflective metallic material, introducing a subtle contrast between matte and reflective finishes. Glass beads were positioned at the tips of the branches to capture and refract ambient light throughout the venue.

While delicate at an individual scale, the cumulative effect of hundreds of packages distributed across the event created a striking visual field of reflected highlights.

As guests entered the space, the tables appeared to shimmer with movement and light. The interaction between the metallic detailing, glass elements, and event lighting transformed the packaging into a temporary installation in its own right, demonstrating how a repeated product can operate simultaneously as packaging, object, and environmental design.
