Menlyn Park Shopping Centre — Immersive Botanical Canopy
Commissioned by Menlyn Park Shopping Centre, this large-scale public installation was conceived as a landmark intervention within one of Africa's busiest retail environments.
The installation explored the idea of entering a suspended landscape.
Positioned above a central bank of escalators, the work was designed to transform a transitional space into a destination experience. Rather than creating a conventional floral display, the intention was to construct an inhabitable environment that visitors would move through and beneath. Suspended overhead at a subtle angle, the work transformed the escalator journey into a moment of discovery, creating the impression of ascending into a floating botanical canopy.
Repetition, density, layering, and scale were used to create an immersive visual field that extended beyond decoration and into spatial experience.
Completed in December 2015, the project represented an early exploration of immersive botanical paper environments at architectural scale and was among the largest paper art installations of its kind produced in the Southern Hemisphere.
